In every issue of Impress, we try to do a teacher feature called Changing Lives. This time, we featured one of the most fashionable English teachers in Isesaki. Our Toni-sensei can speak five languages!

“Mistakes and poor test scores were important to me because I saw where I needed to improve. I worked hard to correct my mistakes. I want my students to know how important it is not to be scared of making mistakes.”

2017年の5月に、伊勢崎市はインプレスに資金を提供することを決めました。完成するまで多くの努力が必要でした。編集者だけでも、１ページ当たり3時間くらいかかりました！

Growing Friendships

One of the articles in the Spring Issue was about one of Japan’s favorite flowers. Did you know that cherry blossoms came to the US from Japan?

These cousins of cherry trees don’t grow any fruit, but the entire tree is covered with flowers… for just a week. This theme of transience is ingrained in Japanese culture.

In May, 2017, we released the first issue of Impress as an official Isesaki City publication. It took a lot of work to get this issue out! On average, it took 3 hours per page for this magazine, and that’s just for the editor!

Isesaki’s Yakimanju

Our second feature of student work ever was about yaki-manju. It’s a local tradition in Gunma, and you can find the sweet miso-flavored grilled bread in plain and red-bean paste-filled flavors.
